Acquire chickens from a reputable source
4
Purchase day-old chicks from an NPIP-certified hatchery, buy started pullets (16–20 weeks old) from a local breeder, or adopt adult hens. Day-old chicks cost $3–5 each and need 6–8 weeks in a brooder before moving outside. Started pullets cost $15–30 each but begin laying within weeks of arrival, skipping the brooder phase entirely.
Why It Works
NPIP (National Poultry Improvement Plan) certification means the flock has been tested for common diseases like pullorum and avian influenza, reducing the risk of introducing illness. Starting with pullets is easier for beginners since they skip the delicate chick stage, but raising chicks produces tamer, more people-friendly birds.
Tips
- Order chicks in spring when temperatures make shipping safer and natural daylight supports growth
- Most hatcheries require minimum orders of 3–6 chicks for warmth during shipping
- If brooding chicks, maintain brooder temperature at 95°F the first week, reducing by 5°F each week
- Avoid acquiring chickens from swap meets or unknown sources — disease risk is high
