Easter Egger — colorful blue, green, and olive eggs
4
Easter Eggers are hybrid chickens that lay blue, green, olive, or occasionally pinkish eggs, adding color variety to your egg basket. Production runs 200-250 eggs per year. True Ameraucanas lay consistently blue eggs, and Araucanas (rumpless, tufted) also lay blue, though both are harder to find than Easter Egger hybrids.
Why It Works
The blue egg gene is dominant, so Easter Egger crosses reliably produce colored eggs. They are generally hardy, friendly, and have varied plumage that makes each bird visually distinct. The novelty of colored eggs also adds value if you sell or give away eggs.
Tips
- Egg color is determined by the individual hen's genetics and does not change — each hen lays one color for life
- Buy from reputable breeders if you want guaranteed blue eggs; hatchery "Ameraucanas" are often Easter Eggers
- Easter Eggers are not a recognized breed but a hybrid — this means more genetic variation in temperament and appearance
