Learn the third shot drop

5

The third shot drop is arguably the most important shot in pickleball. After the serve (shot 1) and return (shot 2), the serving team hits a soft shot (shot 3) that arcs over the net and lands gently in the opponent's kitchen, neutralizing the receiving team's net advantage.

How to Execute

  • The ball's apex should be on your side of the court, descending as it crosses the net
  • Aim to clear the net by just 1–3 feet so it drops softly
  • Bend your back knee and push the paddle face upward to create the proper arc
  • Use a guided pushing motion, not a striking motion — relaxed arm, stable wrist

Tips

  • If the ball is hit too high, opponents will smash it at your feet as you advance
  • Use the third shot drop when the return lands deep near the baseline
  • Use a third shot drive instead when the return bounces high and short
