Learn the lob for defensive reset

4

A lob is a high arching shot that sends the ball deep over your opponent's head, buying you time to recover position or forcing net players to scramble backward.

Two Types

  • Defensive lob: Very high arc with an open paddle face aimed toward the sky. Use when you're in a tough position and need to reset the rally
  • Offensive lob: Flatter trajectory just above opponents' paddle reach. Use when opponents are crowding the kitchen line and leaning forward

How to Execute

  • Start with a continental grip (same as for volleys)
  • Make a gentle low-to-high swing with controlled motion
  • Finish high above your head to control arc and distance

Tips

  • Use lobs sparingly — a predictable lobber gets punished with overheads
  • Turn and run to chase opponent lobs instead of backpedaling. Reserve backpedals for one or two steps only
  • Best used when opponents are positioned close to the net and off-balance
