Set up motion-activated deterrents around the coop
3
Electronic deterrents use light, sound, or water to startle predators away. They work best as part of a layered defense alongside physical barriers.
Recommended Products
- Nite Guard Solar ($20-25 each): Red flashing LED that mimics predator eyes. Mount at eye height for target animals. Effective against raccoons, coyotes, deer, and owls.
- Orbit Yard Enforcer ($60-80): Motion-activated sprinkler with 40-foot range and day/night modes. Startles raccoons, cats, deer, and foxes.
- Predator Guard Ultrasonic ($25-40): Solar-powered, emits ultrasonic sound + flashing LEDs on motion detection.
Why It Works
Nocturnal predators rely on stealth. Sudden light, sound, or water disrupts their approach and creates a negative association with the area. Effectiveness diminishes over weeks as animals habituate, so rotate placement monthly.
Tips
- Use 2-3 different types of deterrent together — habituation to one type happens faster
- Motion-activated lights alone are insufficient for determined raccoons
- These are supplements to physical barriers, not replacements — a hungry predator will push through discomfort
