Ready-to-fruit lion's mane grow kit
4
A pre-colonized lion's mane kit is the simplest way to grow this species. The hard part (sterilization and colonization) is done for you. Just open, mist, and harvest in 10-14 days.
Recommended Kits
- North Spore Lion's Mane Kit ($25-32): Sawdust-based block, consistently produces a single large fruiting body per flush. 2-3 flushes typical.
- Forest Origins Lion's Mane Kit ($25-30): Available on Amazon with solid reviews. Slightly smaller blocks but reliable.
- Fungi Perfecti (Fungi.com) ($30-35): Paul Stamets' company. Premium substrate blend, excellent genetics.
Growing Conditions
- Temperature: 60-70°F (lion's mane prefers cooler temps than oysters)
- Humidity: 85-95%. Mist 3-5 times daily, or use a humidity tent (loose plastic bag with holes)
- Light: Indirect ambient light. A north-facing window or room with overhead lighting is fine.
- Air: Fresh air exchange is critical. Open a window or fan briefly twice daily.
Tips
- Lion's mane kits take 3-5 days longer to pin than oyster kits — be patient
- Harvest when spines are 1/4-1/2 inch long; waiting longer results in a bitter, yellowed mushroom
- After the kit is spent, break it apart and bury in a shaded garden bed with hardwood mulch for potential outdoor flushes
