Ensure adequate coop/shelter space

4

Provide 10-15 square feet (1-1.5 square meters) of indoor shelter space per goose. Use deep bedding of straw or wood shavings at least 4 inches thick, and ensure the shelter has good ventilation openings near the roofline while remaining draft-free at ground level.

Why It Works

Geese sleep on the ground and need enough floor area to lie down without touching neighboring birds. Adequate indoor space prevents moisture buildup from respiration and droppings, reducing the risk of respiratory illness and frostbitten feet during winter confinement.

Tips

  • Use 15 sq ft per bird for breeds over 15 lbs such as Toulouse or African
  • Place ventilation openings high on walls to exhaust moisture without creating ground-level drafts
  • Add fresh bedding on top of soiled layers weekly; do a full cleanout monthly
