Provide shade in hot climates

4

Set up shade structures or plant trees in and around the goose enclosure to block direct sunlight during the hottest hours (10 AM - 4 PM). Geese lack sweat glands and pant to cool down, making them vulnerable to heat stress when temperatures exceed 80°F (27°C).

Why It Works

Direct sun exposure raises a goose's body temperature rapidly, and sustained heat above 90°F can cause heat stroke and death. Shade reduces ground surface temperature by 10-15°F, giving geese a cool zone to rest. Combining shade with access to wading water creates an effective two-pronged cooling strategy. Shade cloth rated at 70-80% UV block is ideal -- it reduces heat while still allowing airflow.

Tips

  • Install 70-80% shade cloth over part of the enclosure if natural tree cover is insufficient
  • Provide shallow wading pools (4-6 inches deep) in shaded areas so water stays cooler
  • Ensure shaded areas are large enough for the entire flock to rest without crowding
