Allow supervised, shared daytime ranging
3
Let geese and chickens share a large open pasture or yard during the day while you monitor for aggression. A minimum of 20 square metres per bird gives both species room to forage independently and avoid confrontation. Ensure the area includes low obstacles, bushes, or small shelters where chickens can retreat out of a goose's reach.
Why It Works
In spacious environments, geese and chickens naturally spread out and largely ignore each other. Geese graze on grass while chickens scratch for insects, so they occupy different niches. Supervision during the first 1-2 weeks identifies aggressive individuals before injuries occur.
Tips
- Start introductions in the largest available space, never in a small run or pen
- Remove any gander that repeatedly chases or strikes chickens
- Provide multiple escape routes such as gaps in fencing that chickens fit through but geese do not
