Opt for Shetland Geese
4
Select Shetland geese, a hardy heritage breed that lays 20 to 40 eggs per year. Originating from Scotland's Shetland Islands, they thrive in cold, wet climates and are excellent foragers that require minimal supplemental feed on good pasture.
Why It Works
Shetland geese are auto-sexing: males are predominantly white while females display a gray-and-white pattern. This makes sexing straightforward from hatch, simplifying flock management and breeding decisions. Their small frame (3-4 kg) and robust constitution make them low-maintenance compared to larger breeds.
Tips
- Source birds from conservation breeders, as the Livestock Conservancy lists them as critically endangered
- Expect smaller eggs than standard breeds; each weighs roughly 120-150 g
- Their strong foraging instinct makes them effective at clearing weeds and grass without heavy grain supplementation
