Create Zone 0 ember-resistant area within 5 feet of your home
5
Establish a noncombustible zone extending 5 feet from all structures using gravel, stone, or concrete hardscape. Zone 0 is the most critical defensible space — over 90% of homes lost to wildfire ignite from embers landing on or near the structure, not from direct flame contact.
Why It Works
Wind-driven embers travel up to a mile ahead of a fire front and accumulate in corners, against walls, and under decks. A noncombustible perimeter eliminates fuel where embers are most likely to ignite the home. Cal Fire and NFPA Firewise research shows Zone 0 hardening is the single highest-impact action for home survival.
Steps
- Remove all vegetation within 5 feet of the house, including foundation plantings, mulch, and dead leaves
- Replace organic mulch with gravel or decorite rock (3/4-inch crushed stone works well)
- Move firewood, lumber, and propane tanks at least 30 feet from structures
- Screen attic vents, eave vents, and foundation vents with 1/8-inch metal mesh to block ember entry
Tips
- Gravel costs $30-$50 per cubic yard — a typical home perimeter needs 3-5 cubic yards
- Ember-resistant vent screens ($5-$15 per vent) are the cheapest and most effective structural upgrade
- Remove patio furniture cushions and doormats during red flag warnings
- Clean gutters of leaves and pine needles — gutters are a primary ember ignition point
