Apply the "can I afford it twice" test
5
Before using BNPL, ask yourself: could I pay for this item in full right now? If the answer is no, BNPL is masking an affordability problem. Only use installment plans for items you can already afford but prefer to spread payments for cash flow reasons.
Why It Works
BNPL makes expensive items feel cheap by breaking them into small payments. This bypasses your natural spending hesitation and leads to buying things you would not purchase if you had to pay at once.
Tips
- If you need BNPL to afford something, you probably cannot afford it yet
- Exception: large necessary purchases (appliances, medical bills) where spreading payments makes practical sense
- Track all active BNPL commitments in one place so you see total obligations
