Use a hardware security key for maximum protection
5
A hardware security key like YubiKey ($25-55) or Google Titan ($30) is a small USB or NFC device that you tap or insert when logging in. It provides the strongest form of 2FA and is virtually impossible to phish.
Why It Works
Hardware keys use cryptographic protocols that verify both you and the website. Unlike codes that can be entered on fake sites, a security key physically refuses to authenticate with a phishing domain. Google reported zero successful phishing attacks on employees after requiring hardware keys.
Tips
- Buy two keys — register both with your accounts and store the backup in a safe place
- Works with Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, GitHub, and many more
- NFC keys tap against your phone; USB keys plug into your computer
- Best for high-value accounts: email, banking, cryptocurrency
