Use Shallow Waterers with Safety Measures

5

Provide clean water in a very shallow waterer or chick-sized base-and-jar unit. For the first week, add clean pebbles or glass marbles to the water tray to reduce the water depth. Quail chicks are extremely small at hatch — roughly the size of a bumblebee — and can drown in as little as half an inch of water.

Why It Works

Pebbles and marbles create safe footing inside the water dish and reduce the open water surface. Chicks can drink between the gaps without risk of falling in, becoming waterlogged, and dying from drowning or chilling. Once chicks grow large enough to stand above the water level (around 7–10 days), the marbles can be removed.

Tips

  • Clean and refill waterers daily to prevent bacterial growth
  • Position waterers away from the heat source to keep the water cool
  • Dip each chick's beak in the water once when first placed in the brooder to teach them where to drink
