Elevate Cages Off the Ground

4

Mount quail cages on sturdy legs or a stand at least 24-36 inches above ground level. Use smooth metal or PVC legs that are difficult for snakes and rodents to climb, and ensure the stand is stable enough to resist being tipped by larger animals.

Why It Works

Ground-level cages give snakes, rats, and weasels direct access through any small opening at the base. Elevation forces predators to climb an exposed surface, which deters most ground-based threats. It also eliminates contact with damp soil, improving ventilation and reducing mold and parasite exposure for the quail.

Tips

  • Wrap legs with sheet metal sleeves (12 inches tall) to create a snake-proof barrier that prevents climbing
  • Bolt the stand to a concrete pad or use ground anchors in windy areas to prevent tipping
  • Keep the area under elevated cages clear of debris and tall grass where predators can hide
