Use a pickle pipe or airlock lid for worry-free fermentation

4

Screw a silicone pickle pipe ($8-12 for a set of 4) onto a wide-mouth Mason jar instead of a regular lid. The one-way valve releases CO2 pressure while preventing oxygen from entering. No need to burp jars or worry about mold forming on the surface.

Why It Works

Oxygen exposure is the main cause of surface mold and kahm yeast during pickle fermentation. A one-way valve maintains a perfectly anaerobic environment without any daily maintenance. Set it and check back in a week.

Tips

  • Combine with a glass fermentation weight to keep cucumbers fully submerged
  • Pickle pipes fit standard wide-mouth Mason jar lids and are dishwasher safe
  • Also works for sauerkraut, kimchi, and any brine-based ferment
  • A worthwhile investment if you plan to ferment regularly
