Co-create a family media agreement everyone signs

5

Sit down as a family and draft rules together. Let children have input on time limits, device-free zones, and consequences. Write the agreement on paper, have everyone sign it (including parents), and post it visibly. Review and update quarterly as children mature.

Why It Works

Children follow rules they helped create because they feel ownership rather than resentment. A written, signed agreement is concrete and eliminates the "you never said that" argument. Including parents shows the rules are about family values, not punishment.

Tips

  • The AAP Family Media Plan tool (healthychildren.org) provides a free template
  • Include positive items: "We will have device-free family dinner" instead of only restrictions
  • Agree on consequences in advance so enforcement is not emotional in the moment
  • Younger children can draw pictures of the rules they helped create
