Make your own all-purpose cleaner with vinegar and water

5

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Add 10-15 drops of essential oil (tea tree, lavender, or lemon) for scent and extra antimicrobial properties. This cleans countertops, glass, appliances, and bathroom surfaces effectively.

Why It Works

Vinegar's acetic acid dissolves grease, mineral deposits, and soap scum. It is mildly antimicrobial and completely non-toxic. One bottle of white vinegar ($3) makes dozens of spray bottles of cleaner, eliminating both chemical exposure and plastic waste.

Tips

  • Do not use on natural stone (marble, granite) or hardwood — acid damages these surfaces
  • For tougher jobs, spray undiluted vinegar, let sit 10 minutes, then wipe
  • Baking soda paste (baking soda + small amount of water) handles scrubbing jobs vinegar cannot
  • Add citrus peels to vinegar and let steep 2 weeks for a naturally scented, more powerful cleaner
