Replace plastic food containers with glass and stainless steel

5

Switch food storage from plastic to glass containers (Pyrex, Anchor Hocking) and stainless steel containers (LunchBots, ECOlunchbox). Never heat food in plastic — microwaving and dishwashing plastic accelerates breakdown and microplastic release into food.

Why It Works

Plastic containers shed microplastics especially when exposed to heat, acid (tomato sauce), or fat (oily foods). Glass and stainless steel are inert — they do not release any particles into food regardless of temperature or contact time.

Tips

  • Replace plastic containers gradually as they wear out rather than all at once
  • Glass containers with snap-lock lids are microwave, oven, and freezer safe
  • For children's lunchboxes, stainless steel is lighter and more durable than glass
  • Silicone is generally considered safer than plastic but research is still emerging
