Prevent Piling and Smothering

4

Use a round brooder or block off square corners with curved cardboard inserts to eliminate spots where poults can pile up. Maintain correct, evenly distributed brooder temperature since cold stress is the primary trigger for dangerous piling behavior in turkey poults.

Why It Works

Turkey poults instinctively crowd together when frightened or cold, and square corners trap birds at the bottom of the pile. Smothering can kill multiple poults in minutes. Rounded walls keep poults moving and prevent deadly pile-ups. Proper temperature removes the main motivation for huddling, while adequate lighting reduces startle responses.

Tips

  • Check on poults frequently during the first 72 hours when smothering risk is highest
  • Keep a dim light on at night to prevent panic from sudden darkness
  • Avoid loud noises and sudden movements near the brooder
  • If poults consistently pile in one area, check for drafts or cold spots at that location
