Tall and Secure Fencing

5

Install sturdy woven wire or welded wire fencing at least 5 to 6 feet high around the outdoor run. Bury the fence base 12 inches underground or lay a 2 to 3 foot wire apron flat on the ground extending outward from the fence line to stop digging predators such as foxes and coyotes from tunneling under.

Why It Works

Ground predators like foxes, coyotes, and stray dogs rely on either climbing over or digging under fencing. A 5 to 6 foot fence defeats most climbers, and a buried or apron-style base stops diggers. The combination addresses both primary breach methods, making the run far more secure than a short fence alone.

Tips

  • Turkeys can fly over fences under 6 feet; clip primary flight feathers on one wing or use taller fencing for lighter breeds
  • Angle the top 12 inches of fencing outward at 45 degrees to deter climbing predators
  • Check fence tension and post stability seasonally, as frost heave and soil settling loosen posts over time
