Nightly Lock-Up Routine
5
Lock all turkeys inside a secure coop every evening before dusk without exception. Establish a consistent routine so the flock learns to return to the coop at the same time each day. Use raccoon-proof latches such as carabiners, two-step slide bolts, or padlocks on every door and access panel.
Why It Works
The majority of predator attacks on poultry occur between dusk and dawn when raccoons, foxes, coyotes, opossums, and owls are most active. A locked coop during these peak hours eliminates exposure during the highest-risk period. Even one forgotten night can result in total flock loss, making consistency the critical factor.
Tips
- Train turkeys to return to the coop by offering scratch grain inside at the same time each evening
- Install an automatic coop door with a timer or light sensor as a backup for nights you may be late
- Use at least two different latch types per door since raccoons can learn to open simple spring latches
