Introduce Poults to Adult Chickens (High Risk)

Brood turkey poults separately for the first 8-12 weeks, then introduce them to an existing chicken flock once they reach sufficient size to resist bullying. Be aware this method carries significant disease risk — Blackhead disease (histomoniasis) affects turkeys at any age with 70-100% mortality, making strict separation the safer alternative.

Why It Works

Separate brooding protects vulnerable poults from physical aggression by adult chickens during their most fragile weeks. Larger, older turkeys are better equipped to establish their place in a mixed flock hierarchy. However, this only addresses behavioral risk — it does nothing to prevent Blackhead disease transmission, which remains the primary danger of co-housing these species.

Tips

• Introduce turkeys only after they are larger than the chickens to reduce injury from pecking
• Watch for Blackhead symptoms: yellow droppings, droopy wings, darkened head skin, and lethargy
