Ensure Ample Space
2
Provide significantly more space than single-species minimums when housing turkeys and chickens together. Adult turkeys need 8-10 square feet of coop space per bird (versus 4 for chickens) and at least 20 square feet of outdoor run each. Double these figures in a mixed flock to reduce stress-driven aggression and territorial conflict.
Why It Works
Turkeys are substantially larger and more territorial than chickens. Adult toms weigh 16-25 pounds and can injure or kill chickens during confrontations. Ample space allows both species to establish separate zones within the enclosure, reducing the frequency and intensity of aggressive encounters. Overcrowding triggers stress behaviors including feather-pulling, pecking injuries, and feed competition.
Tips
- Provide elevated roosts at different heights — turkeys prefer roosting at least 3-4 feet high while chickens use lower perches
- Create visual barriers such as straw bales or partition walls so birds can retreat from line of sight
- This approach does not reduce Blackhead disease risk — only full separation eliminates that threat
