Monitor Interactions Closely
2
Supervise all interactions between turkeys and chickens during the first 2-3 weeks of co-housing, with daily spot checks continuing thereafter. Be prepared to separate birds immediately if you observe sustained aggression, pinning, or repeated attacks. Adult toms can exceed 20 pounds and are capable of killing chickens with a single blow from their wings or spurs.
Why It Works
Turkeys and chickens establish flock hierarchy through physical confrontation. Without intervention, encounters can escalate quickly because turkeys outweigh chickens by 2-4x. Active monitoring lets you identify and remove aggressive individuals before injuries occur. Early intervention during the establishment period sets the tone for long-term flock dynamics.
Tips
- Watch for warning signs: a turkey standing tall with puffed feathers and fanned tail directed at chickens indicates imminent aggression
- Have a separate pen ready at all times so you can isolate aggressive birds within seconds
- Monitor daily for Blackhead symptoms (yellow droppings, darkened head, lethargy) — behavioral monitoring alone does not prevent disease transmission
