Use Quality Feed and Fresh Water
5
Provide a fresh, commercially milled pelleted feed with 16-18% protein and unlimited timothy or grass hay daily. Replace water at least once per day -- more often in hot weather -- using clean bottles or crocks. Discard any feed that smells musty, looks discolored, or is past its mill date by more than 90 days.
Why It Works
A balanced diet directly supports immune function. Moldy feed contains aflatoxins and other mycotoxins that damage the liver and gut lining, opening the door to enteritis and coccidiosis. Consistent access to clean water keeps the digestive tract moving and helps rabbits regulate body temperature.
Tips
- Store pellets in airtight bins off the ground to prevent moisture and rodent contamination
- Scrub water bottles or crocks with a bottle brush weekly to remove biofilm
- Introduce any new feed brand gradually over 7-10 days to avoid digestive upset
