Odor Control: Sanitation Frequency
5
Establish a regular cleaning schedule matched to your housing type and rabbit density. For wire-bottom cages, remove waste from drop trays every 1-2 days. For solid-bottom enclosures, swap soiled bedding daily and perform a full clean-out at least once per week.
Why It Works
Ammonia concentration rises exponentially as urine accumulates. Frequent removal breaks the cycle before odor becomes noticeable beyond your property. This is the single most effective odor control measure available and costs nothing beyond time.
Tips
- In summer or high-density setups, clean daily rather than every other day
- Scrape drop trays rather than just dumping -- residue left behind continues producing ammonia
- Compost collected waste in a covered bin at least 6 meters from property lines to avoid secondary odor issues
