Estimate Water Costs
2
Factor in water cost based on herd size and delivery method. An adult rabbit drinks 50-150 ml per kg of body weight daily, meaning a 10-lb New Zealand doe consumes roughly 10-20 oz per day and up to 1 quart daily when nursing. A 10-rabbit operation uses approximately 1-2 gallons daily. On municipal water at $3-5 per 1,000 gallons, annual water cost is under $5. The real expense is delivery equipment: nipple waterer setups cost $30-80, while automatic systems run $100-300.
Why It Works
While water itself is cheap, underestimating consumption leads to dehydration, which reduces growth rates and milk production. Lactating does lacking adequate water may cannibalize litters.
Tips
- Install automatic nipple or cup watering systems to save daily labor and ensure constant supply
- In freezing climates, budget $20-50 for heated water bottles or insulated systems
- Check water daily regardless of system type since failures cause rapid health decline
