Be Aware of Shared Parasite Risks
4
Keep a close watch on parasite loads when goats and chickens share space. Both species are susceptible to Coccidia, a protozoan parasite that spreads through fecal-oral contamination. Young kids and chicks under 8 weeks are especially vulnerable to coccidiosis outbreaks.
Why It Works
Most internal parasites are species-specific, but Coccidia crosses the goat-chicken barrier. Manure from one species contaminates shared feed, water, and bedding, creating a cycle of reinfection. Recognizing this overlap lets you target prevention at the actual transmission route rather than guessing.
Tips
- Run fecal egg counts every 4-6 weeks on both species to catch rising parasite loads early
- Remove manure from shared areas at least daily to break the Coccidia lifecycle
- Keep young kids and chicks separated from shared pasture until their immune systems mature (typically 8-12 weeks)
