Add supers before the colony outgrows its space
4
Place honey supers on the hive proactively in early spring, before 70-80% of frames in the existing boxes are drawn and occupied. Giving bees room to store incoming nectar and expand the brood nest removes the congestion signal that triggers swarm preparations.
Why It Works
Overcrowding is the single strongest swarm trigger. When foragers return to a packed hive with nowhere to deposit nectar, pheromone communication breaks down and queen cells are started. Adding a super restores space and allows normal pheromone flow throughout the colony. Research from the UK National Bee Unit confirms that timely supering reduces swarm incidence significantly in managed colonies.
Tips
- Use drawn comb for supers when available, as bees fill it faster than bare foundation
- If using foundation, brush a light coat of beeswax on it to encourage bees to move up
- Check that the queen excluder is not acting as a barrier bees refuse to cross; temporarily remove it if bees are reluctant to enter the super
- In strong nectar flows, a colony can fill a medium super in under two weeks, so stay ahead by adding the next box when 6 of 10 frames are in use
