Electric fencing
5
Install a multi-strand electric fence around your apiary to deliver a non-lethal but memorable shock that teaches bears to stay away. Use a charger rated at minimum 6,000 volts with at least 0.7 joules of output to penetrate thick bear fur. Space strands at 10, 20, and 30 inches from the ground, with a fourth strand at 40 inches for persistent bears.
Why It Works
Bears learn quickly from negative experiences. A single shock from a properly powered electric fence is usually enough to deter repeat visits. Wildlife management agencies across North America consistently rank electric fencing as the most effective long-term bear deterrent for apiaries, with success rates above 90% when properly maintained.
Tips
- Clear vegetation within 3 feet of the fence line to prevent grounding
- Test voltage weekly with a fence tester; maintain at least 5,000 volts on the line
- Use a solar-powered charger for remote apiary locations
- Bait the fence with bacon or sardine strips on aluminum foil during initial setup so bears contact it with their nose or tongue first
- Ensure grounding rods are at least 3 feet deep in moist soil
