Bear-resistant hive straps
3
Secure hive bodies and supers together with heavy-duty ratchet straps to prevent bears from prying apart and dismantling your hives. Wrap at least two straps per hive vertically over the top and under the bottom board, then cinch them tight with the ratchet mechanism.
Why It Works
Bears attack hives by knocking them over and pulling apart the individual boxes to reach honey and brood. Straps hold the hive together as a single unit, forcing the bear to work much harder for a reward. This added difficulty often causes the bear to give up, especially when combined with other deterrents.
Tips
- Use metal ratchet straps or reinforced nylon rated for at least 500 lbs of tensile strength
- Anchor hive stands to the ground with stakes or concrete blocks to resist tipping
- Straps alone will not stop a determined bear; pair them with electric fencing for full protection
- Check straps regularly for rust, fraying, or loosened tension
- Consider bolting hive bodies together for added structural integrity in high-bear-pressure areas
