Elevate hives on tall stands
4
Raise hive entrances at least 18 inches (45 cm) off the ground using sturdy stands built from lumber, concrete blocks, or metal frames. At this height, skunks cannot comfortably stand on their hind legs to scratch at the entrance, which is their primary hunting technique.
Why It Works
Skunks are short-legged animals that rely on standing upright and scratching the landing board to provoke guard bees. An 18-inch elevation forces the skunk to fully extend, exposing its unprotected belly to stinging bees. Most skunks abandon hives they cannot comfortably reach.
Tips
- 18 inches is the minimum -- 24 inches (60 cm) provides a larger safety margin
- Ensure stands are stable and level to prevent hive tipping in wind
- Elevation also improves airflow under the hive and reduces ground moisture
- Combine with carpet tack strips on the landing board for maximum deterrence
