Relocate apiary
3
Move your apiary to a location less frequented by bee-eaters when predation pressure is persistently high and other deterrents prove insufficient. Scout alternative sites that are away from known bee-eater nesting colonies, perching trees, and migratory flyways. Wooded or sheltered areas are preferable, as bee-eaters favor open landscapes for aerial hunting.
Why It Works
Bee-eaters concentrate their foraging within a few kilometers of their nesting sites and prefer open terrain where they can spot and intercept bees in flight. Placing hives in sheltered locations or away from nesting areas significantly reduces encounter rates between the birds and your bees.
Tips
- Move hives at night when bees are inside and calm
- Relocate at least 3 km from the original site to prevent bees returning to the old location
- Check with local birding groups or wildlife agencies to identify bee-eater nesting sites in your region
- Consider this option when seasonal predation losses exceed 20-30% of forager bees
