Live-trap and relocate skunks
3
Set a live cage trap (e.g., Havahart 1079 or similar raccoon-sized trap) near the hive entrance in the evening, baited with cat food, sardines, or peanut butter. Cover the trap with a dark cloth or tarp to reduce the chance of being sprayed. Check the trap at dawn and relocate the captured skunk at least 5 miles (8 km) away.
Why It Works
Live trapping directly removes the individual skunk causing damage. Skunks are creatures of habit and will return nightly to a food source, making them relatively easy to trap once you identify the problem.
Tips
- Check local wildlife regulations first -- many jurisdictions require permits for trapping and relocation
- Approach a trapped skunk slowly and quietly; covering the trap with a towel before transport greatly reduces spraying
- New skunks may move into the territory, so combine trapping with physical deterrents for lasting protection
- If you prefer not to handle skunks, hire a licensed wildlife control operator
