Cinnamon barrier around the hive
2
Sprinkle ground cinnamon in a thick line around the hive base, outer cover, and any cracks where ants enter. Reapply after rain or every 3-5 days to maintain a consistent barrier. Keep cinnamon outside the hive only.
Why It Works
Cinnamaldehyde, the active compound in cinnamon, disrupts ant pheromone trails and acts as a contact irritant. It interferes with ant chemoreception, making treated surfaces unnavigable for foraging ants. The strong scent masks existing trail pheromones, forcing ants to seek alternative routes.
Tips
- Use Ceylon or Cassia cinnamon with high cinnamaldehyde content for stronger repellency
- Apply a band at least 3-5 cm wide for an effective barrier
- Best suited for mild to moderate ant pressure; combine with stand elevation for heavy infestations
- Avoid applying inside the hive, as fine particles can irritate bee respiratory systems
