Diatomaceous earth barrier

3

Spread a ring of food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) around the hive base, creating a continuous dry barrier 5-10 cm wide that ants must cross. Keep DE strictly outside the hive and away from the entrance where bees land.

Why It Works

DE consists of microscopic fossilized diatom shells with sharp edges that abrade the waxy cuticle of ant exoskeletons. Once the cuticle is damaged, ants lose moisture rapidly and die from desiccation within 24-48 hours. The mechanical action means ants cannot develop resistance, unlike chemical pesticides.

Tips

  • Use only food-grade DE; never pool-grade, which contains crystalline silica harmful to humans and bees
  • Reapply after rain, as DE loses effectiveness when wet
  • Wear a dust mask during application to avoid inhaling fine particles
  • Do not apply DE near the hive entrance or inside the hive, as it is equally abrasive to bee cuticles on direct contact
