Fumigate with PDB crystals

4

Place paradichlorobenzene (PDB) crystals on a paper plate atop stacked supers, then seal the stack with a tarp or tape. The vapors kill wax moth eggs and larvae over 2-3 days. Use approximately 3 oz (85 g) of crystals per 5-super stack and replace every 4-6 weeks during storage.

Why It Works

PDB sublimes into a heavy gas that sinks through the stack, reaching all comb surfaces. At sufficient concentration it is lethal to all wax moth life stages but does not damage wax or wooden equipment.

Tips

  • Air out treated combs for at least 24-48 hours before returning them to colonies; residual PDB vapors can harm bees
  • Store stacks in a cool, shaded area since heat accelerates crystal evaporation
  • PDB is not approved for organic beekeeping and is banned in some jurisdictions; check local regulations before use
  • Do not confuse PDB with naphthalene (mothballs), which contaminates wax and honey and should never be used in beekeeping
