Store dried pollen with silica gel desiccant packs
4
Dry pollen to below 10% moisture, then seal it in airtight containers with food-grade silica gel packets. The desiccant maintains low humidity inside the container, creating conditions inhospitable to moth larvae and beetle activity. This method works well for short-to-medium-term storage at room temperature.
Why It Works
Pollen moths and beetles require moisture to feed and reproduce. Silica gel maintains relative humidity below 30% inside sealed containers, which inhibits pest development and prevents mold growth. Properly dried pollen with desiccant can last 6-12 months at cool room temperature.
Tips
- Use indicating silica gel (changes color when saturated) so you know when to replace or reactivate packs
- Reactivate saturated silica gel by baking at 120°C (250°F) for 1-2 hours
- Use approximately 5-10 g of silica gel per 100 g of pollen
- Store containers in a cool, dark location; heat accelerates nutrient degradation even when pollen is dry
- Check seals monthly, especially in humid climates above 60% ambient RH
