Manage hive temperature

2

Keep hives cool during hot weather to prevent beeswax comb from softening and collapsing. Position hives in locations that receive afternoon shade, or install shade cloth above the hive to block direct sunlight. Ensure proper ventilation by using screened bottom boards and propping open the outer cover slightly to allow hot air to escape.

Why It Works

Beeswax begins to soften at around 35°C (95°F) and becomes structurally weak above 40°C (104°F). Foundationless comb lacks the reinforcement of embedded wires or plastic, making it especially vulnerable. Reducing hive temperature keeps wax firm enough to support the weight of honey and brood without sagging or detaching from the top bar.

Tips

  • Orient hive entrances away from direct afternoon sun exposure
  • Use light-colored hive boxes to reflect heat rather than absorb it
  • Avoid opening hives for inspections during peak heat hours
  • In extreme heat, a ventilated inner cover or upper entrance provides significant cooling
