Provide shade
4
Position hives under tree canopy or install shade cloth over them to block direct sun exposure, especially during peak afternoon hours. Orient hive entrances to face east or north to minimize solar heat gain on the front wall.
Why It Works
Direct sunlight raises internal hive temperature rapidly. Shade reduces solar heat absorption by up to 10°C (18°F) on the outer cover, lowering the cooling burden on bees and preventing wax comb from softening or collapsing.
Tips
- Use 50-70% density shade cloth for a good balance of shade and airflow
- Leave clearance above the hive so hot air is not trapped against the cover
- Deciduous trees provide summer shade while allowing winter sun exposure
- Avoid placing hives in full shade all day, as some morning sun helps bees start foraging earlier
