Uncapping plane or knife

4

Use an uncapping plane or heated knife to slice off wax cappings from honey frames before extraction. Heated knives run on electricity to warm the blade, cutting through cappings smoothly and handling crystallized honey with ease. Uncapping planes work similarly but use a planing motion to shave cappings off evenly.

Why It Works

Wax cappings seal each honey cell and must be removed before centrifugal extraction. A heated or sharp uncapping tool cuts cleanly through the wax layer, fully exposing the honey cells and allowing the extractor to spin out honey efficiently. This reduces uncapping time compared to a cold knife, which drags and tears the comb.

Tips

  • Keep a heated knife at moderate temperature to avoid melting excess wax into the honey
  • Use an uncapping fork or scratcher to open cells missed by the knife
  • Collect wax cappings in a tray for later rendering into beeswax products
  • Work in a warm room (around 80-90°F) to keep cappings pliable
