Radial extractor

5

Use a radial honey extractor to process frames faster and with less comb damage than a tangential model. Radial extractors hold frames like spokes in a wheel and spin honey from both sides of each frame simultaneously using centrifugal force.

Why It Works

Tangential extractors press against one face of the comb at a time, requiring you to flip each frame and run a second spin cycle. Radial extractors apply centrifugal force along the plane of the comb, extracting both sides at once. This halves the number of spin cycles, reduces handling, and puts less stress on fragile combs, resulting in fewer blowouts and more reusable frames.

Tips

  • Radial extractors are most cost-effective for operations processing 20 or more hives per season
  • Start spinning at low speed and gradually increase to avoid comb breakage, especially with new wax
  • Clean the extractor thoroughly between batches to prevent cross-contamination of honey varietals
  • Consider a motorized radial extractor for large harvests to reduce manual cranking fatigue
