Start with nucs for faster colony buildup

4

Purchase a 5-frame nucleus colony (nuc) for the fastest path to a productive hive. Nucs arrive with a mated, laying queen, 2-3 frames of capped and open brood, frames of honey and pollen, and roughly 10,000 bees already working as a unit. Transferred into a 10-frame deep, a healthy nuc typically fills the box within 4-6 weeks in good conditions.

Why It Works

Because the queen is already accepted and laying, brood production continues without interruption. Nucs skip the 2-3 week comb-building delay that packages face. Colonies started from nucs are often strong enough to produce a modest honey surplus (10-30 lb) in their first season and enter winter with better stores.

Tips

  • Expect to pay $150-$250 per nuc depending on region and genetics (2025 US pricing)
  • Inspect before accepting -- look for a visible laying pattern covering at least 70% of brood frames
  • Transfer frames in the same order they sat in the nuc box to minimize disruption
  • Feed 1:1 sugar syrup only if nectar flow is weak; established nucs often do not need it
  • Order early -- reputable nuc suppliers sell out by January or February in most areas
