Start with packages to save on initial cost

Order a 3 lb bee package ($100-$175 in most US regions, 2025 pricing) for the most affordable way to start a new colony. A package contains roughly 10,000 loose bees and a separately caged mated queen. After installation, the bees must draw comb, the queen must be released and accepted, and brood rearing begins from scratch.
Why It Works
Packages cost $50-$100 less per colony than nucs, making them practical when starting multiple hives on a budget. They are also more widely available and ship easily through the mail, giving beekeepers in remote areas better access. Because the bees are unrelated to the queen, colony genetics can be selected independently.
Tips
- Feed 1:1 sugar syrup continuously until bees have drawn comb on at least 6-7 frames -- packages have no comb or stores
- Do not disturb the queen cage for 3-5 days after installation to allow workers to accept her
- Expect colony buildup to take 6-8 weeks longer than a nuc; first-year honey harvest is unlikely
- Install packages in the evening or on a cool day to reduce drifting
- Check for queen acceptance 5-7 days after installation by looking for eggs
