Requeening

3

Requeening is a recommended strategy for managing sacbrood. Sacbrood outbreaks are often linked to colony stress and viral susceptibility. Replacing the queen can revitalize the colony by introducing a queen with potentially better genetics and higher egg-laying capacity. A new queen can lead to a healthier and more vigorous bee population, better able to overcome the sacbrood virus. Requeening is particularly beneficial in cases of recurring sacbrood or in colonies that are generally weak or underperforming. Select queens from reputable sources to ensure quality and health. A queen cage is used for the safe introduction of the new queen, and a hive tool is necessary for hive manipulation during the requeening process.
