Sacbrood

Sacbrood is a viral disease of honey bee larvae caused by the Sacbrood virus (SBV). It is one of the most widespread viral diseases in honey bees. Sacbrood primarily affects young larvae, causing them to die in the pre-pupa stage. Infected larvae have a characteristic 'sac-like' appearance and are easily removed from the cell. Sacbrood is often stress-related and can be triggered by poor weather, nutritional deficiencies, or other colony stressors. While sacbrood can appear alarming, colonies often recover on their own, especially with improved conditions and supportive management. Diagnosis is typically visual, based on the sac-like appearance of larvae. Severe cases may warrant intervention, but often, addressing underlying stress factors is sufficient.
