Carpet tack strip or hardware cloth at the entrance

4

Place a strip of carpet tack board or a section of hardware cloth (1/2-inch mesh) on the ground directly in front of the hive entrance, extending about 3 feet (90 cm) outward. Skunks must stand on this uncomfortable surface to scratch at the hive, and the sharp points or rough mesh deter them from staying.

Why It Works

Skunks have sensitive, relatively bare paw pads. Standing on protruding tack points or stiff wire mesh causes enough discomfort that most skunks will avoid the hive after one or two attempts. This method targets the skunk's specific behavior of standing and scratching at ground level.

Tips

  • Carpet tack strips are available at any hardware store for a few dollars per strip
  • Secure the strips or mesh to a plywood base so they stay flat and in position
  • Check periodically that leaves, dirt, or snow have not covered the surface
  • Combine with hive elevation for a two-layer defense
