Freezing equipment

Freezing stored beekeeping equipment is a highly effective method to kill small hive beetle (SHB) eggs and larvae. Storing frames and hive boxes in a deep freezer at temperatures below freezing for 24 to 48 hours is sufficient to eradicate SHB pests. This method is particularly practical for smaller quantities of equipment, such as frames removed during hive manipulations or honey harvests. Freezing is a non-chemical approach that leaves no residue and is safe for wax combs and beekeeping equipment. It is a reliable way to sanitize stored equipment and prevent SHB infestations from spreading to bee colonies. Access to a deep freezer is required for this method.
