Nosema disease
Nosema disease in honey bees is caused by microsporidian parasites, primarily Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae. These parasites infect the honey bee's midgut, disrupting digestion and nutrient absorption. Nosema infections can lead to dysentery, reduced lifespan, poor colony buildup in spring, and decreased honey production. Nosema ceranae is more virulent and has largely replaced Nosema apis in many regions. Diagnosis involves microscopic examination of bee gut tissue or spore counts. Nosema disease is stress-related and exacerbated by poor nutrition, mite infestations, and unfavorable weather conditions. Preventative and treatment strategies focus on reducing stress and improving colony health. Nosema spores are highly resilient and can persist in hive equipment for extended periods, posing a risk of reinfection.
- Fumagillin-B (Fumadil-B)4
Administer Fumagillin-B (trade name Fumadil-B) in sugar syrup during spring and fall to treat or prevent Nosema disease caused by Nosema apis. Mix the antibiotic into 1:1 sugar syrup following label dosage instructions precisely, and feed it to colonies before peak infection periods. Note that…

- Hygienic hive management3
Maintain clean, well-ventilated hives and rotate old combs out on a regular cycle to reduce Nosema spore buildup without chemicals. Replace dark, heavily used brood combs every 2-3 years, and sterilize hive components with acetic acid fumigation or heat treatment when equipment is rotated between…

- Essential oils (prophylactic)2
Add thymol or lemongrass oil to sugar syrup feed as a supplemental measure to support colony health and potentially reduce Nosema spore loads. Mix 1-2 drops of food-grade essential oil per liter of 1:1 sugar syrup and feed to colonies during spring buildup or fall preparation. This approach is…
